Green house cleaning is an environmentally friendly way to clean a home. Completely chemical-free... it is health-friendly to the people and pets who live in the home.
Many people all over the world have turned to this alternative as not only a safer way to clean their home, but as a cost-effective way as well. Reasons for this trend vary from protecting the environment from harsh chemicals to the health of children, but whatever the reason, it is changing the way people look at cleaning their house.
Approximately 90 percent of poisonings will occur right in the home and most of those are due to the exposure to toxic chemicals in many common cleaning products found in countless homes. People will put their cleaning products out of reach of small children for fear of exposure and/or ingestion. But that's not the only way children are ingesting many of these chemicals. Most of these products will leave residue and fumes long after they're used. Floors, countertops, and other common surfaces that are touched by children and adults alike, should simply never be cleaned with these poisonous products.
For many years, bleach was the cleaner of choice to rid homes of nasty germs and bacteria. Bleach can burn the skin, irritate the eyes and irritate and damage the lungs when fumes are inhaled. While bleach does a great job and sanitizing, a safer alternative could be something as simple as lemon juice. The citric acid found in lemons is powerful enough to use as a disinfectant. It is inexpensive and environmentally/kid friendly.
Another "green" way to clean would be to use vinegar on glass and mirrors, as opposed to a harsh ammonia-concentrated glass cleaner. Many people will tell you to use vinegar soaked newspaper to clean windows but the reality is that it is still messy and can take a lot of time. Taking environmental consideration even a step farther, you could use an old used baby blanket or t-shirt to do the job. Apply a little vinegar to the cloth and away you go.
It is said that any cleaning task around the home can be completed with one or more of four simple ingredients. These must-haves are almost always already in the kitchen so it's easy enough to make the switch. The four favourites of the green cleaning world are lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda and salt.
Green cleaning is also a money-making industry so beware of companies labelling their cleaning products as "green" when the opposite is true. It is often hard to determine which products are actually eco-friendly and child-safe, which is why it is important to do your research and know what it is you're purchasing. Remember, not all labels will list every ingredient in the mix. This is why the push to use your common household ingredients is so strong. Far too many people put their faith in these false claims by companies out to make a dollar. The simple solution is to stick with products you know are harmless and you will be sure to be living in an eco-friendly, child-safe home.
